Volcanic History Tour
Super Jeep Tour
Duration: 3 hours
Level: Easy
Mai - October
Departure time: 9:30am
For three hours take you on a ride to explore the volcanic region east of Vík called Mydalssandur in a massive Mercedes Sprinter Super Jeep. Myrdalssandur is a flood plain and sand desert created by the massive water outbursts (some of the biggest on the planet) that come down from the glacier when Katla volcano underneath it blows. The stories about Katla are so famous that Astrid Lindgren even named one of her characters, a dragon, after the volcano.
You are gonna find out more about the volcanic history in this area, hear famous Icelandic stories told over generations, learn about the wildlife in this area. If you like Star Wars you are in for a treat, because "Rogue One" was filmed in the area that we drive through. The landscape impresses with picturesque views that are ideal to take great photos. We are gonna visit the glacier and its ash layers in the ice. If conditions allow it we even take a look inside the ice cave (usually this is however only possible in the winter). On the way back we visit an old sea cave where lots of birds and different plants can be spotted and enjoy an empty black sand beach. This tour is suitable for both young and old and a family friendly experience.
Katla Ice Cave Tour
Super Jeep Tour
Duration: 3 hours
Level: Easy-Medium
March, April and November
Departure time: 9:30am
A cave made from the breath of the dragon. On this tour we drive over Mýrdalssandur to a glacier tongue called Katlajökull. We explore the glacier and take a look at the ash layers in the ice from previous eruptions that are so typical of this glacier. Going inside the ice cave is the highlight of this tour and a very special experience. We will of course provide crampons and helmets for you for your safety. Did you know that the ice caves change very quickly? The melting water and the movement of the glacier forms the caves and often they are hardly recognizable if you visit them again a few weeks later. Therefore every visit is unique. Also the colour of the ice varies day by day, from blue in the winter to cristal clear in the fall and spring. Depending on the weather we will stop at one or two places on the way back and take the car for a short spin on the beach. This tour is suitable for both young and old and a family friendly (with children who have started going to school) experience.
Glacier Hiking on 600 year old ice
Glacier hikes we guide upon request on Sólheimajökull. This is a great place to see, how much the ice has melted in the last couple of years. If you have never stepped on rock solid 600 year old ice, then this is your chance and a lot of fun. You will get geared up with crampons for a good grip on the ice and ice axes to fight the polar bears ;-) and to explore the ice. We only offer these tours upon requests, because there are already tons of other tour operators offering tours on Sólheimajökull. For us as a tiny company, it is hard to compete with the big giants, so we only offer tours during off-peak times. This way we can enjoy the glacier without waiting in line to go up or to take a photo. We highly recommend an afternoon hike around 4pm, an evening hike or a morning hike at 8.00am. If you are interested, just send us an e-mail and we will provide you with more details.

This particular mountain has been placed on a list in a book called 500 places on earth you must see. The area is just a fascinating place to drive in good weather.
